Minimalism. A trend? A lifestyle? A cliché? Nope. Minimalism is a way to find yourself and to create balance where clutter exists. Here’s how to become a minimalist entrepreneur, from my point of view.
I’ve always loved writing. It was an inner gift I’ve had since I can remember. Words have always helped me communicate, sort out problems and set clear expectations to whatever situation has been presented to me.
And as I’ve grown older, I’ve realized that life has moments, and time is our most precious gift. So while life threw barriers in my professional path, I had two options: the first - whine and accept that I could no longer work for a 9-5, or discover what I wanted to do with my life and make a living out of it.
So I took control, and decided that if time is our most precious gift, I wasn’t going to live the rest of my life spending time doing things I
don’t love.
I stopped blaming myself for not
having a job title, and very quickly realized that I could be free from headaches, stress and excel spreadsheets.
But the journey has its ups and downs, I won’t lie. So here’s my takeaway from pursuing mindfulness in starting a business as a minimalist entrepreneur.
There is so much “clutter” everywhere. Online, offline and especially on social media. So the easier you accept that we are all different, and marketing standards do not need to define who we are or how we should look like, the sooner you’ll see.
You’ll open your eyes to new possibilities. You’ll understand that you get to choose what to do. You have control over what happens in your life. Not the other way around.
Online gurus will tell you you have to do 517 things to be successful, and online course teachers will tell you what has worked for them. And again, we circle back to worrying about all the time starting a successful online business will take, and we worry that we’ll never have enough time for everything that’s on a business owner’s to-do list.
Time time time.
Instead of going crazy since I’m only human, and should only work 8 hours a day or less (my life goal is to work 3 days a week although I’m not there yet), I decided to choose the path of tidiness in all its forms.
I spend most of my time planning. Making to do lists. Organizing my schedule, batch-producing content, batch-working on client projects, etc. When you get in the habit of planning, you’ll start to see that hitting those goals is not as hard as it seems if you stick to a schedule. So there’s the secret, there’s no hidden agenda here I promise. You don’t need a 10k marketing coach (although if you want to hire one great), but what you do need is a plan.
Since living my life and enjoying every moment is my top priority, the third principle that has allowed me to apply minimalism to my journey as an entrepreneur has been to choose to do more while managing to work less.
This shift in mindset had a massive impact on my pricing and overall offerings. I constantly see memes and opinions from entrepreneurs that say that now that they have a business they work 24/7, and I feel this is so wrong. If you work 24/7 in your business you may be doing something wrong, and the whole point of having a business is to create something beautiful that will allow you to profit from it and have a decent work-life balance.
So with that being said, it has been essential for me to always question the way I do things. “Could I charge more and go all in with my clients so that I can have more profit with one single client vs having the same mediocre profit with 30 new clients?”. “Do I see myself having the 7 figure income because I want a 7 figure income, or will I be satisfied with an income that just allows me to be happy? “Why would I need 7 figures, I don’t need another house or car”.
You get the idea.
And I feel that so many people have it wrong. Starting a business should be about helping others and making an impact on people's lives. If your brand does that, I sincerely pat you on the back, and if you need help with getting there, don’t be afraid to say hi.
